Lee Seung Gi will be making his return to kdramaland with the upcoming Hong Sisters drama,My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (aka nine-tailed fox). He takes on the role of a young man who falls in love with a gumiho, disguised as a beautiful young girl. Seung Gi’s character is described as immature and foolish, and has dreams of being an action star. After learning that his girlfriend is a gumiho, he fears for his liver and ends up getting a job in order to purchase a cow (to feed his girlfriend the cow’s liver).
I don’t love the Hong Sisters but did enjoy You’re Beautiful quite a bit and like Seung Gi’s choice for his next drama. I think the Hong Sister’s quirky style will be a good fit for him and give him an opportunity to grow without stretching him beyond his limit. The Hong Sisters plan on bringing quite a bit of melodrama to My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, but I’m sure we’ll get our dose of toilet humor and the like from the sisters as well.
With the announcement of Seung Gi’s casting, interest is building on who will play the gumiho. The media has focused on Shin Se Kyung (High Kick Through the Roof) as the possible candidate. She has confirmed that she’s received a casting call but is still in the review stages. The Hong Sisters are looking for a woman in her early 20s to play the role. I’ve seen a few episodes of High Kick and also remember her from Queen Seondeok and like Shin Se Kyung quite a bit.
The casting is scheduled to be completely in April and the drama will begin shooting in May with a tentative air date in mid summer. Interestingly, there is another gumiho drama in the works over at KBS, The Gumiho’s Revenge, which will be a sageuk by PD Lee Gun Joon (Loving You,Loveholic). The casting has not been announced but it also aims to air in the summertime. After the whole Iljimae hoopla, it’s funny that Seung Gi has another two dramas – one folklore thing happening again.
